Hideaways Africa Conducts Cross-Border Guides Training Programme

In early 2026, Hideaways Africa conducted a cross-border guides training programme, bringing together field guides from properties across Zimbabwe and Botswana. The training was hosted at Hideaways Nantwich Lodge and focused on strengthening guiding standards, improving field-based interpretation, and aligning guest experience across the portfolio.

The initiative forms part of an ongoing annual programme designed to ensure consistency in guiding practices while supporting knowledge exchange between regions and ecosystems.

Training Objectives and Focus Areas

The programme was structured to address both practical guiding skills and the theoretical knowledge required for nature-based tourism. Core focus areas included:

  • Guest experience management and guiding ethics
  • Pre-briefing procedures and communication standards
  • Game drive planning and vehicle preparation
  • Wildlife approach techniques, including safety and photographic considerations
  • Interpretation of ecosystems and natural processes
  • Track and sign identification, including animal tracks and dung

Guides also developed the ability to recognise animal behaviour patterns, including predator-prey interactions and early warning signals, supporting more effective tracking and interpretation in the field.

Environmental Knowledge and Ecosystem Understanding

A key component of the training focused on strengthening ecological knowledge relevant to guiding areas across southern Africa.

This included:

  • Geological history and landscape formation
  • Savanna ecosystem dynamics and plant succession
  • Grassland evolution and herbivore adaptation
  • Tree and plant identification and their ecological roles
  • The nitrogen cycle and broader ecosystem interactions

The programme also connected regional systems, linking northern Zimbabwe to wider landscapes such as the Okavango Delta and arid environments in southern Africa.

Specialist Knowledge Development

The training incorporated specialist modules to expand guiding knowledge beyond general wildlife interpretation:

Birding

Focus was placed on bird identification, behaviour, migratory patterns, and breeding strategies. Environmental drivers such as seasonal rainfall and insect abundance were also covered, alongside the cultural significance of key species.

Entomology

Guides developed identification skills across key insect groups, including butterflies, termites, grasshoppers, and locusts, with emphasis on their ecological roles and seasonal indicators.

Mammals

The programme included updated behavioural insights based on current research, with a focus on elephant ecology in Hwange, as well as herbivore and carnivore dynamics, population structures, and species interactions such as competition and symbiosis.

Astronomy

Guides were trained in night sky interpretation, including constellation identification, the Milky Way, and the cultural significance of celestial features within the region.

Application in the Field

Practical field sessions formed a core part of the programme, allowing guides to apply theoretical knowledge in real-time conditions. This included:

  • Tracking and interpreting animal movement
  • Applying wildlife approach techniques
  • Linking environmental factors to observed behaviour
  • Delivering structured and informative guest interactions

These sessions ensured that training outcomes translate directly into guiding practice.

Assessment and Ongoing Development

The programme concluded with an internal evaluation process, including mock assessments to measure individual understanding and identify areas for further development.

This approach enables ongoing refinement of training methods and supports continuous development across guiding teams.

Operational Impact

By aligning guiding knowledge and practices across multiple regions, the programme supports consistent guiding standards while maintaining strong local expertise at each property.

This contributes to a more structured and informed safari experience for guests, while reinforcing Hideaways Africa’s focus on professional guiding, conservation awareness, and knowledge-led travel.
