Ghana breaks ground on Accra airport concourse to ease congestion and boost connectivity
President John Dramani Mahama has officially broken ground on a new interconnecting concourse at Accra International Airport, linking Terminals 2 and 3 in a move designed to ease congestion and improve passenger flow at West Africa's busiest gateways. The project comes as passenger traffic through the airport has grown steadily from 1.8 million in 2022 to a projected 2.5 million in 2025, with peak period congestion increasingly affecting both passenger experience and operational efficiency. Once complete, the concourse will include modern boarding bridges, upgraded waiting areas, VIP lounges, and expanded retail facilities.
The groundbreaking follows Ghana's separate announcement this week of plans to establish a new national airline, and together the two developments signal a deliberate push to position Accra as a serious aviation hub for West Africa and intercontinental traffic between Africa, Europe, and the Americas. For the region's travel industry, improved infrastructure at Accra is a meaningful development. Better connectivity through a well-functioning hub tends to lift the entire surrounding market, making it easier and cheaper for travellers to move across West Africa and beyond.
