Ethiopian Airlines breaks ground on Bishoftu International Airport

Ethiopian Airlines Group began construction of Bishoftu International Airport on 10 January 2026, following an official groundbreaking attended by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, government officials and industry stakeholders. The new hub in Bishoftu is intended to expand Ethiopia’s aviation capacity and support growing passenger and cargo demand across Africa.

Phase one is slated for completion by 2030 with capacity for 60 million passengers annually, rising to 110 million at full build-out. Ethiopian unveiled the airport design and said resettlement and livelihood restoration for affected communities have been completed. The project is positioned to narrow infrastructure gaps and advance AfCFTA goals by boosting trade, tourism and connectivity – strengthening Ethiopia’s role as a continental gateway.
