Ethiopia Credits Strategic Policy for Aviation Resilience Amidst Global Fuel Crisis

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has credited coordinated government policy for enabling the country to maintain uninterrupted domestic fuel supplies and sustain aviation operations during the ongoing global fuel crisis. Speaking via the Government Communication Service, PM Abiy highlighted Ethiopian Airlines as a key example of this resilience, noting that the carrier continued operations without disruption at a time when major European airlines were reducing or suspending flights due to fuel shortages. The prime minister attributed the outcome to strategic foreign currency allocation, targeted subsidy reforms and Ethiopia's growing diplomatic reach, which he said secured reliable alternative fuel supply options.

PM Abiy also pointed to Ethiopia's accelerating shift towards electric mobility as a structural factor in reducing the country's dependence on fuel imports, easing broader macroeconomic pressure. The statements come as the global aviation industry continues to grapple with fuel cost volatility linked to the Iran conflict, which has prompted schedule reductions among carriers worldwide. For Ethiopian Airlines - currently leading the $12.5 billion Bishoftu International Airport development - the ability to maintain operational continuity reinforces its strategic positioning as Africa's dominant aviation hub.
