Cape Town International outlines R10.1bn upgrade

Cape Town International Airport has confirmed a phased infrastructure programme worth about R10.1 billion as part of Airports Company South Africa’s R21.7 billion network investment. The flagship project is a realigned 3,500 m x 60 m main runway – budgeted at R6.39 billion and due for contractor appointment in December 2026 – to improve air traffic efficiency and unlock terminal development space. Domestic terminal works are slated to begin in April 2027, with R2.39 billion for arrivals and R500 million for a departures extension, while phased upgrades to the international terminal total R863 million.

The runway will be Code F compliant and include rapid exit and partial parallel taxiways to cut runway occupancy and improve on‑time performance. Terminal projects add gates, airbridges, apron capacity and enhanced immigration, commercial and lounge facilities, alongside improved circulation, screening, baggage, prayer and family spaces. ACSA says the investment will bolster connectivity, tourism access and trade in the Western Cape, with works carefully phased to minimise disruption – positioning CTIA for sustained passenger growth and operational resilience.
