Australia Displaces Germany in South Africa's Top Overseas Feeder Markets
Australia has entered South Africa's top three long-distance feeder markets for the first time, displacing Germany following an 18.8% year-on-year surge in arrivals in June 2026. According to Statistics South Africa's latest monthly release, Australian tourist numbers climbed from 10 196 to 12 113 over the period, securing the country's third-place ranking behind the United States (40 566 arrivals) and the United Kingdom (16 863 arrivals). Overall overnight tourist arrivals grew 9.8% year-on-year to 823 365 in June 2026, with overseas tourists accounting for 17.2% of the total.
The data points to a broader structural shift in South Africa's international tourism profile. Air travel accounted for 92.5% of overseas arrivals, with OR Tambo and Cape Town International airports serving as the primary entry points, and the typical overseas visitor was male (54.3%) with a median age of 45. Not all markets performed equally, however - Indian arrivals fell sharply by 39.6% to 4 003, while North Africa showed strong momentum, with Tunisian arrivals recording a 261.8% seasonal surge in Q2 2026. SADC tourist volumes for the second quarter reached 2 130 193, exceeding pre-pandemic 2019 levels by 17.3%, with 97.3% of all international tourists entering South Africa for leisure, visiting friends, or personal reasons.
