Akagera districts receive Rwf1.2bn in tourism revenue sharing

Districts bordering Akagera National Park received Rwf1.2 billion in Tourism Revenue Sharing funds for the 2025–2026 fiscal year on 22 November 2025. Under the government’s 10% TRS policy, allocations included Rwf857 million for Kayonza, Rwf285 million for Nyagatare and Rwf142 million for Gatsibo – reflecting Akagera’s footprint largely within Kayonza.

Officials highlighted the scheme’s role in linking conservation with local development, with communities prioritising projects such as a youth health centre, clean water access and upgrades to health facilities. Since 2010, Akagera has channelled US$4.7 million into community initiatives, while in 2024 alone Rwf3.27 billion supported 105 projects – from water points and ECD centres to electrification and income‑generating programmes – reinforcing community buy‑in and park protection.
