African filmmakers spotlight rhino dehorning drive in KwaZulu-Natal

A new African‑led documentary, Wild Hope Rhino Ops, captures one of the largest rhino dehorning operations at Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park in KwaZulu‑Natal. Produced by the Nature Environment and Wildlife Filmmakers collective in partnership with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the film follows Ezemvelo’s game capture head, Dumisani Zwane, and his team as they work to safeguard more than 1,000 rhinos amid a poaching surge that saw over 300 animals killed last year. The title premiered on 6 October on PBS Nature’s digital platform, underscoring the role of conservation in protecting South Africa’s wildlife tourism asset base.

Part of the Wild Hope series inspired by Professor Andrew Balmford’s book, the documentary is written, directed and edited by South African filmmaker Nathan Rice, with contributors from nine African countries under executive producer G Luck. NEWF says the project centres African scientists, filmmakers and leaders in telling conservation stories. The film is entering festivals, with plans for an isiZulu version to support community outreach and a potential national TV broadcast – developments that could broaden awareness and support for rhino conservation critical to regional tourism.
