Acsa Launches Terminal Upgrade at Gqeberha's Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport

Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) commenced construction on a Terminal Capacity Optimisation project at Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport (CDSIA) in Gqeberha on 26 June 2026, targeting peak-period congestion identified in a 2024 capacity analysis. The project, expected to conclude on 16 November 2026, will expand check-in capacity, improve passenger flow between check-in and security, increase security screening throughput and enlarge the departures lounge. The work forms the opening phase of a broader five-year infrastructure upgrade programme at the Eastern Cape gateway, ahead of a full terminal expansion planned for 2030.

The intervention addresses a decade-long infrastructure standstill at several of Acsa's regional facilities, many of which have not seen significant capital investment since upgrades carried out ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Acsa describes CDSIA as a critical regional asset, noting its proximity to the Port of Gqeberha and the Coega Special Economic Zone, and its role in supporting tourism growth and trade connectivity in the Eastern Cape. Airport manager Claudia Daniels confirmed that measures are in place to minimise passenger disruption during the five-month construction period, with Acsa committing to regular progress updates for stakeholders throughout the build.
