Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project

Website http://www.kiliporters.org

The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the working conditions of the porters on Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. These porters play a crucial role in assisting climbers to reach the summit, carrying equipment, food, and personal belongings through the challenging and often harsh conditions of the mountain. Despite their essential contributions, porters have historically faced poor working conditions, including inadequate wages, insufficient clothing and equipment, and a lack of proper shelter and food.

KPAP aims to address these issues through a comprehensive approach that includes education, advocacy, and partnership with trekking companies. The organization works to ensure that porters receive fair wages, proper attire, and adequate food and shelter while on expeditions. KPAP also focuses on raising awareness among climbers and tour operators about the ethical treatment of porters, encouraging responsible tourism practices that prioritize the well-being of the workforce.

In addition to its advocacy work, KPAP offers training programs for porters to enhance their skills, including English language courses, first aid training, and environmental conservation techniques. These programs aim to empower porters, improving their employment opportunities and promoting sustainable practices on Mount Kilimanjaro.

KPAP operates through the support of donations, partnerships, and volunteer efforts, relying on the global climbing community to help enforce ethical standards and practices. By championing the rights and welfare of Kilimanjaro's porters, the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project plays a vital role in ensuring that the pursuit of adventure on one of the world's most iconic mountains is carried out with respect and dignity for those who make it possible.
