Zambia Mobilises National Response to Human-Wildlife Conflict

Zambia’s Ministry of Tourism has convened a high-level stakeholder meeting in Lusaka to address the rising incidence of human-wildlife conflict (HWC), which threatens both rural livelihoods and biodiversity. The forum brought together representatives from government, local communities, conservation organisations, traditional leadership, the private sector, and international partners in a bid to formulate coordinated, practical responses.

Tourism Permanent Secretary Evans Muhanga emphasised the need for solutions that balance conservation with economic development, while the Department of National Parks and Wildlife outlined ongoing efforts including rapid response teams, non-lethal deterrents, and community awareness. Stakeholders called for long-term investment in community-led conservation, regional coordination on migratory species, and the creation of a national HWC strategy. The outcomes of the meeting are expected to inform both near-term interventions and Zambia’s broader tourism and conservation policies.
