Why Africa’s Air Travel Growth Is Still Being Held Back

Despite growing demand for travel within Africa, the continent’s aviation sector continues to face significant challenges. In a recent interview, South African Airways CEO Prof. John Lamola highlighted restrictive bilateral agreements, infrastructure limitations, and policy fragmentation as some of the key obstacles slowing growth.

Lamola stressed that improved air connectivity is essential for unlocking tourism, trade, and broader economic development across Africa. He also called for stronger collaboration between governments, regulators, and airlines to create a more integrated and competitive aviation ecosystem that can support the continent’s long-term growth ambitions.
