UN Tourism chief hails Lagos for hosting Africa’s first E1 electric powerboat race

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili has praised Lagos for hosting Africa’s first E1 Series electric powerboat championship, positioning the city among elite global event destinations. The race ran from 3–5 October 2025 at the Black Diamond Hotel on Victoria Island, bringing together E1 teams, business leaders, government officials and international sports figures for the series’ debut on African waters.

Pololikashvili, who attended alongside Didier Drogba and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, called the event a milestone for marine innovation and tourism development through sport. Nigeria’s Minister of Tourism, Hannatu Musa Musawa, said the race elevates the country’s profile in sustainable tourism and the blue economy. A UN Tourism – E1 Series MoU signed earlier this year in Monaco underscores plans to promote clean marine mobility and advance sustainable sports tourism.
