The Safari Collection Reveals a Hidden Side of the Mara

As part of its ongoing work to harness conservation technology to protect the Maasai Mara, The Safari Collection has partnered with the Mara Rhino Rangers to establish a network of camera traps across the reserve.

Led by wildlife photographer Will Burrard-Lucas in collaboration with Sala’s Camp and the Narok County Government, the project is helping build a clearer picture of the Mara’s endangered black rhino population. Early results are already promising, with reported rhino sightings increasing by around 30%.

One camera, positioned above a remote forested river crossing, has captured a side of the Mara rarely seen. Among the images are multiple sightings of the critically endangered black rhinoceros. With fewer than 6,500 remaining worldwide, and only around 50–60 individuals in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, each image plays an important role in strengthening the protection of one of Africa’s most vulnerable species.
