Tanzania Invests 578m/- in Mangrove Boardwalk Eco-Tourism Upgrade
Tanzania has allocated 578 million shillings to upgrade tourism facilities at the Mangrove Boardwalk in the Tanga region, as part of President Samia Suluhu Hassan's broader national drive to grow the country's tourism sector. The development, situated in the Sahare area where the Indian Ocean meets coastal mangrove forests, includes a 350-metre wooden bridge, a dedicated photography area, modern restrooms, and a restaurant. Constructed across two phases, the project was designed to minimise environmental disruption and avoid large-scale deforestation of the surrounding coastal ecosystem.
Since the initial facilities were installed, the site has already attracted more than 19,500 visitors from across Tanzania, signalling strong domestic interest in eco-tourism experiences. The first phase was funded internally by the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) during the 2024/25 fiscal year, with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism providing additional funding to complete the project. The Tanga Mangrove Boardwalk is emerging as a notable addition to Tanzania's eco-tourism offering, complementing the country's established wildlife and coastal attractions with a community-focused, low-impact destination experience.
