Sustainability- The Maanzoni Million Tree Challenge

In our efforts to contribute to environmental conservation and ecotourism, we have collaborated with the Maanzoni Million Tree Challenge to plant and grow trees as we work to enrich and preserve the habitat for the countless species of animals at the Maanzoni Wildlife Estate.

The estate serves as a sanctuary not only for various species of wildlife but also for a wide range of vegetation, both of which coexist for mutually beneficial reasons. Being the heart of the Athi Kapiti Ecosystem, Maanzoni plays a remarkable role as a migratory route, a birthing ground and a connecting link to other conservancies, all of which fueled our desire to ensure the ecosystem is protected and nurtured to serve its purpose.

During the onset of our partnership with the MMTC Founder Susan Ngigi, we learned that the area was adversely affected by effects of Climate Change and human encroachment which were the leading factors endangering this ecosystem. We worked together to develop a hands-on approach to the tree growing journey then later began putting in the work.

The process started all the way from seed preparation, mixing soils and filling bags to grow the seedlings, which we began with 2000 seedlings. This was later followed by drilling holes and planting the trees, all of which our team is continuously participating in, alongside two other operators: Africa Rebound Safaris and Award Tours and Safaris.

Collectively with other parties in the Maanzoni Million Tree Challenge, we are so far nurturing the growth of the 4000 trees we have planted in the area, comprising of mostly the Acacia Kirkii and Yellow Fever species among others.

Planting trees for a better tomorrow gives hope that the wildlife will have access to a better home, food, shade, diversity and other basic necessities, which eventually trickles down to also helping to adapt to and mitigate the effects of Climate Change..

The initiative has also created an opportunity for a big game count which took place on the 4th of February this year that ran from Malili to ILRI, Game Ranching, Lisa Farm, Mulinges, Kasangas, Malindas, Kwasyombunguo, Maanzoni and Kwa Kyelu, which was a guided exercise facilitated by Rangers from KWS, KFS and Maanzoni.

Sustainability, ensuring the future of life on Earth, is an infinite game, the endless expression of generosity on behalf of all.
