Tanzania-based adventure operator Summits Africa has reaffirmed its commitment to responsible tourism and environmental conservation through a large-scale clean-up initiative on Mount Kilimanjaro, collecting and removing rubbish left along the iconic mountain’s trekking routes.

The initiative brought together guides, porters and local team members who dedicated time to clearing discarded plastic bottles, food packaging and other waste from the slopes of Africa’s highest mountain. The effort forms part of Summits Africa’s wider commitment to sustainable trekking practices and preserving Kilimanjaro’s fragile ecosystem for future generations.

Mount Kilimanjaro attracts thousands of climbers each year from around the world, making environmental stewardship increasingly important. By actively participating in mountain clean-up operations, Summits Africa aims not only to reduce waste on the mountain itself, but also to raise awareness among travellers and the wider tourism industry about the importance of responsible travel in Tanzania.

“As part of a wider community of climbing companies we’re always really stoked to be part of all and any initiatives involving the future health of the mountain. Keep following us as we now develop new routes over this coming season and watch out for other ways your guests can be part of a healthy Kilimanjaro experience” - Says Director Ake Lindstrom.

As demand for ethical and environmentally conscious travel continues to grow, Summits Africa hopes its efforts will inspire greater collaboration across the tourism sector to keep Kilimanjaro clean, protected and thriving for generations to come.

Summits Africa will be publishing a short information document in addition to all bookings on packing, reducing waste and weight. The company continues to encourage guests to minimise single-use plastics, follow Leave No Trace principles and support sustainable tourism initiatives throughout Tanzania.
