Stellenbosch estate opens world’s first fine water tasting room

Lanzerac Wine Estate in Stellenbosch has opened what it says is the world’s first Fine Water tasting room, created with The Fine Water Company. The 45-minute guided tasting at The Library is led by certified water sommelier Nico Pieterse and costs R295 per person, featuring six globally sourced waters – three still and three sparkling – with some bottles priced above R1,000.

The experience focuses on clarity, aroma, texture and minerality, with guests learning how source, mineral composition, pH and carbonation influence flavour. Rare labels on pour include d’ORO (Romania), Marzia (Italy), VEEN (Bhutan/Finland), Nevas (Germany – its 3‑litre bottle retails around US$180.99/R3,079), Three Bays (Australia) and Lofoten (Norway). Fine Water Society founder Dr Michael Mascha attended the launch, highlighting interest in “water as a terroir-driven experience”, signalling a niche, alcohol-free premium offer for South Africa’s tourism market.
