South Africa Surpasses 7.5 Million International Arrivals in First Eight Months of 2026

South Africa welcomed more than one million international tourists in August 2026, a 7.4% increase on August 2025, bringing total international arrivals to over 7.5 million between January and August. The United States remained the largest overseas source market with 37,134 arrivals in August, followed by the United Kingdom with 25,749 and Germany with 14,731. UN Tourism has ranked South Africa as the strongest-performing African destination in the first half of 2026, recording 12% growth in international arrivals compared with the same period in 2025, and placing the country among the top 20 best-performing destinations globally.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said the figures demonstrate sustained demand for South Africa and called for the momentum to be channelled into tangible economic outcomes. "Our focus must now be on converting that demand into investment, jobs and economic opportunities - giving visitors more places to go, more experiences to enjoy and more reasons to stay longer," she said. The department noted that the growth reinforces the case for expanding and diversifying South Africa's tourism offering, with the South African Tourism Infrastructure Investment Summit this week bringing together investors and industry stakeholders to translate rising arrivals into new tourism products, experiences and infrastructure.
