Marine conservation efforts on South Africa's West Coast have received a major R31 million upgrade for the West Coast National Park. The funds will improve facilities catering to the increasing tourist numbers, which reached 12,800 visitors during the 2023/24 peak season.

Upgrades include a new R27 million entrance gate, recreational amenities like a putt-putt course and go-karts, and refurbishments to the Geelbek restaurant and conservation offices. Construction is also underway for new ablution facilities at the popular Kraalbaai site.

The investments aim to enhance visitor experiences while protecting the area's rich biodiversity, including endangered bird species like the Cape Cormorant that breed in the park's three marine-protected areas. With over 250 bird species, the park's conservation efforts are vital for preserving South Africa's natural heritage.
