Self-drive ban at Sossusvlei postponed – access unchanged for now

A planned ban on self‑drive 4x4 access to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei has been postponed following feedback from tour operators, with About Africa Co and Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism confirming that access beyond the 2x4 parking area will remain unchanged until further notice. The restriction, originally set for 15 December, would have limited the 4x4 sand track to Namibia Tourism Board‑registered operators and an official shuttle, with an updated implementation schedule expected in early 2026.

About Africa says the proposed managed access system targets environmental protection, track management and visitor safety in a fragile UNESCO‑listed dune landscape, citing off‑track driving, dune crust damage and frequent vehicle recoveries. Public concerns include a planned shuttle fare increase from N$200 to N$260 – pricing is under joint review with MEFT – as authorities and industry work towards a phased, clearly communicated transition.
