Open-Water Swimmers Raise Over R600,000 for Turtle Conservation in Robben Island Crossing

Around 30 open-water swimmers completed an 11km crossing from Robben Island to Granger Bay in Cape Town on 25 April, raising over R600,000 for the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation's Turtle Conservation Centre. The event far exceeded its initial fundraising target of R250,000, with funds directed towards the Foundation's expanded conservation facility planned for Granger Bay, which rescues, rehabilitates, and releases stranded and injured sea turtles along South Africa's coastline. Foundation Executive Chairperson Ann Lamont noted that turtles frequently wash ashore after ingesting plastic or falling prey to predators, underscoring the urgency of the conservation work.

The swim drew participants of varying experience levels, including solo swimmers who completed the crossing without wetsuits in the cold Atlantic waters. The event highlights a growing intersection between adventure tourism, community fundraising, and marine conservation along the Cape Peninsula - a region that attracts significant numbers of eco-conscious visitors annually. Members of the public wishing to support turtle conservation efforts can find further information through the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation.
