The release of David Attenborough's Netflix documentary A Gorilla Story is driving renewed global interest in Rwanda's mountain gorillas, according to Lydia Eva Mpanga, founder of Nkuringo Safaris. Speaking to Euronews Travel, Mpanga said the increased attention is influencing traveller behaviour, even though Rwanda's tightly controlled gorilla permit system limits the number of visitors who can take part in treks.

Mpanga noted that travellers are now booking further in advance, staying longer and placing greater emphasis on the gorilla trekking experience within their itineraries. She revealed that around five in ten guests booking gorilla safaris are now choosing to trek twice during their visit, compared to roughly two to three in ten previously.

With more than 18 years of experience in gorilla tourism, Mpanga believes the documentary has encouraged travellers to think more seriously about the experience and the conservation story behind it. She also highlighted that Rwanda's permit system, conservation model and community-focused approach ensure that growing interest does not come at the expense of the gorillas or their habitat.

The trend reflects the continued influence of high-profile wildlife storytelling on travel decisions and reinforces Rwanda's position as a leading conservation tourism destination.
