Nigeria’s NANTA Embraces Digital Era, Targets Illegal Ticket Sales

The National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA) has unveiled new digital platforms, including a redesigned website, a mobile application, and updated identification cards, as part of a broader effort to modernise its operations. Announced during NANTA’s 49th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lagos, these tools are designed to improve access to services, enhance member verification, and strengthen public trust across Nigeria’s travel trade. The AGM, themed “Collective Prosperity Through Market Protection”, brought together stakeholders from aviation, tourism, and government, underscoring the sector’s commitment to sustainable growth.
A key issue addressed at the event was the persistent challenge of cross-border ticket sales, where international travel agents sell outbound tickets from Nigeria while diverting proceeds offshore—a practice estimated to cost the local market 40% in revenue loss. NANTA President Yinka Folami confirmed ongoing investigations into several international agencies and warned of legal consequences for offenders and complicit local agents. The association’s stance, supported by the Federal Ministry of Aviation, highlights a strong push for enforcement, transparency, and the protection of Nigeria’s formal travel industry within the broader African tourism landscape.
