New entry protocols at Madikwe amid foot and mouth outbreak
The North West Parks and Tourism Board has introduced new entry rules at Madikwe Game Reserve in response to one of South Africa’s worst foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks. Visitors arriving by air or road are required to register with NWPTB officials and verify their identity with a valid passport or South African ID.
Vehicle tyres will be sanitised at entry points and visitors asked to pass through disinfectant footbaths. Rhulani Safari Lodge said the measures are preventative, align with conservation best practice, and that FMD does not transmit to humans. NWPTB staff will be on site to explain the process and answer questions, with the protocols aimed at safeguarding guests and the reserve’s wildlife.
