Namibia Launches Sustainable Aviation Fuel Feasibility Study with ICAO Backing

Namibia has launched a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) feasibility study in Windhoek, conducted under the International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) Assistance, Capacity-building and Training for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (ACT-SAF) Programme, with funding from the Swiss government. The six-month study will assess Namibia's readiness across key areas including policy and regulatory frameworks, feedstock availability, infrastructure capacity, and investment potential, with the aim of producing an evidence-based roadmap tailored to the country's specific context.

Speaking on behalf of the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), chief counsel Cristoph Seimelo noted that Namibia's selection reflects both national commitment and growing international confidence in its green aviation agenda. The initiative builds on Namibia's existing sustainability credentials, including voluntary participation in ICAO's Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) since 2017, its national Green Hydrogen Programme, and the involvement of industry players such as WestAir Aviation Namibia/FlyNamibia and the Namibia Airports Company. Together, these efforts position Namibia as a potential leader in Africa's emerging SAF ecosystem, with the study expected to attract investment, support green industrialisation, and contribute to the continent's growing voice in global aviation sustainability.
