Limpopo Community Launches Eco-Tourism Office and Hiking Trails Along Olifants River
The rural community of Finale, located approximately 32km outside Hoedspruit in Limpopo, has launched an eco-tourism office and a series of hiking trails along the Olifants River, marking a significant step toward sustainable community-led tourism. Developed under the guidance of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere (K2C) and its partners, the refurbished office - officially opened in December last year - serves as a visitor hub and base for managing local tourism initiatives. The surrounding area offers dramatic natural assets including views of the Drakensberg mountains, waterfalls, biodiversity-rich landscapes and culturally significant caves, which the community is now working to leverage as a source of sustainable livelihoods.
The launch event brought together residents, partners and visitors for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, cultural performances and a guided 5km hike to the Maburuburung Waterfalls, led by six trained local guides. Community Development Forum chairperson Aubrey Malepe described the office as a turning point for Finale, a community that has long faced limited economic opportunities, contributing to poverty and poaching. K2C's Lauren Booth noted that the next phase of the initiative will focus on improving booking systems, communication platforms and marketing efforts to attract a wider visitor base, with the broader goal of building livelihoods rooted in environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability.
