Kenya Supreme Court blocks avocado farm in Amboseli corridor
Kenya’s Supreme Court last month dismissed a final petition by KiliAvo Fresh Ltd, ending plans for a 180‑acre avocado farm in a key wildlife corridor east of Amboseli National Park. The ruling upholds the environmental authority’s licence revocation over risks to elephant movement, groundwater and approved land‑use plans, following challenges from conservation groups, community leaders and government agencies.
The decision reinforces community‑led land‑use plans and conservation leases that keep corridors open for wildlife and livestock. Nearly half of land zoned for wildlife and livestock in Kimana, Eselenkei and Nairrabala is now under lease, while the wider wildlife economy generated KES 2.36 billion in 2023 – supporting around 1,520 full‑time jobs – underscoring the importance of open corridors to sustainable tourism and pastoral livelihoods.
