Kenya Launches 30% Cruise Incentive to Drive Visitors from Coast to National Parks

Kenya has introduced a 30% group discount for cruise passengers visiting its national parks, in a bid to increase visitor conversion from the coast to inland destinations. Announced alongside the arrival of the Viking Sky at the Port of Mombasa on 19 March - carrying 795 passengers and 473 crew - the initiative is a collaboration between the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Kenya Tourism Board, targeting key destinations including Tsavo East, Tsavo West, Amboseli and the country's Marine Parks. The programme will initially run from March to May 2026.

Currently, around 20% of cruise passengers extend their trips to Kenya's parks and reserves; the government aims to double that figure to 40% through the new group pricing structure. KWS will pilot the scheme with Pollmans Tours & Safaris, with a planned rollout to global operators including Abercrombie & Kent. The initiative also integrates the KWS Conservation Donation Portal into cruise itineraries, enabling direct visitor contributions to conservation efforts. Park revenues are projected to increase by up to 40% as a result, reinforcing Kenya's positioning as a leading destination for integrated cruise-and-safari experiences on the Indian Ocean circuit.
