Kenya and WWF secure USD 3.9m to restore ecological corridors

Kenya’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has partnered with WWF‑US and NETFUND on a USD 3.9 million ecological restoration project approved by the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund – managed by the Global Environment Facility. The initiative – Sustainable Management and Restoration of Threatened Ecological Corridors – aims to restore critical ecosystems, improve landscape connectivity and advance Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework targets on ecosystem restoration (Target 2) and protected areas (Target 3) by 2030.

NETFUND will serve as the principal executing agency, with coordination across government and partners following meetings in Nairobi with representatives from WWF‑US, WWF‑Kenya and the GEF. The delegation cited gains from the Lake Naivasha Ecosystem‑Based Management Project and reviewed the Heart of Conservation pipeline initiative under the Amboseli Ecosystem Fund. Strengthened restoration and protection efforts are expected to bolster biodiversity, climate resilience and the foundations of Kenya’s nature‑based tourism.
