Kenya and EU sign Sh4.8bn green deals ahead of UNEA‑7

Kenya and the European Union signed four financing agreements worth Sh4.8 billion on 14 November in Nairobi to support the green transition, climate resilience, biodiversity conservation and a circular economy ahead of UNEA‑7 taking place in Nairobi 8-12 December. The funding aims to strengthen climate governance, restore degraded landscapes and expand green economic opportunities – measures that underpin destination resilience, wildlife habitats and community livelihoods linked to tourism.

The package includes Sh600 million for an emissions Measurement, Reporting and Verification system to track progress on Kenya’s NDCs; Sh2.1 billion to restore the Lake Baringo watershed, co‑financed by the EU, Italy and Germany and implemented by AICS and GIZ; Sh1.3 billion for community conservancies and biodiversity protection in northern Kenya led by IUCN; and Sh750 million for the Switching Kenya Green programme, implemented by Hivos to help MSMEs adopt sustainable practices and create green jobs. EU officials highlighted close alignment on environmental priorities as Kenya prepares to play a leading role at UNEA‑7.
