Hideaways Expands into Greater Kruger with the Launch of Amava River Lodge

Hideaways Africa is proud to announce the newest addition to our portfolio of safari experiences: Hideaways Amava River Lodge, formerly known as Bundox River Lodge. This intimate Greater Kruger Camp, located in the northern part of the Balule Private Game Reserve, marks an exciting expansion for Hideaways into one of South Africa’s most sought-after safari destinations.
Amava, meaning "experiences" in isiXhosa, captures the essence of what Hideaways stands for – meaningful moments in wild places. Overlooking the perennial Olifants River, Amava River Lodge offers an authentic Kruger safari experience, with daily game drives, river views frequented by elephants, hippos, and buffalo, and the opportunity to reconnect with nature in one of Africa’s richest ecosystems.
This milestone represents more than a geographic expansion – it’s a deepening of their commitment to curating distinctive and diverse experiences across Southern Africa. With Hideaways’ footprint now extending into Greater Kruger, Amava River Lodge enhances the range of safari circuits offered, complementing their destinations in Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.
“Expanding into the Kruger region is a significant step for us as a brand,” says Sulet Burger-Prinsloo, Head of Hideaways Africa. “It not only gives our guests access to one of Africa’s most legendary wildlife areas, but also strengthens our ability to offer multi-country, seamless safari experiences that reflect our ethos of soulful, sustainable travel.”
With five beautifully appointed tents, an inviting main area with sweeping river views, and a design that reflects understated “luxury” in the bush, Amava River Lodge is ideal for small groups, couples, and independent travellers looking for a private bush escape. The lodge is easily accessible via Hoedspruit Airport being only 45 minutes away (as the recommended route, other access is available from JHB), making it a perfect starting or ending point for a southern Africa adventure.
Guests at Amava River Lodge can look forward to a diverse and immersive range of activities. These include twice-daily game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, Big Five walking safaris led by expert guides, and a unique boat cruise on the Olifants River – the only Big Five river cruise in the region, offering an entirely new perspective of the bush. Conservation-minded travellers can participate in interactive visits to a neighbouring conservation camp, where they gain firsthand insight into vital wildlife protection initiatives.
As Amava River Lodge is welcomed into the Hideaways family, they remain focused on creating journeys that leave a lasting impact – on their guests, the communities they work with, and the wild places they help protect.
