First Direct Cruise from Asia Marks Milestone for Kenya's Cruise Tourism

Kenya's cruise tourism sector has reached a significant milestone with the arrival of MS Viking Yi Dun, the first cruise vessel to sail directly from Asia to the Port of Mombasa. The Norway-flagged ship arrived carrying 717 passengers from China and 16 other nationalities, highlighting growing interest from Asian source markets.

The vessel's arrival marks the ninth cruise ship to call at Mombasa during the current October-to-June cruise season, with cruise arrivals continuing to grow year-on-year. Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) expects 20 cruise ship calls before the end of 2026, reflecting continued investment in cruise infrastructure and destination development.

Passengers received a traditional Mijikenda cultural welcome before departing on excursions across Kenya, while KPA highlighted the arrival as an important step in diversifying the country's tourism markets beyond Europe and strengthening Mombasa's position as a regional cruise gateway.
