Egypt and Rwanda Agree on Nature-Based Water Management Projects Along Nile Basin

Egypt and Rwanda have agreed to integrate flood protection infrastructure with rainwater harvesting dams at a priority site, using nature-based solutions to maximise returns, reduce erosion, and improve long-term sustainability. The agreement emerged from the second meeting of the Egypt-Rwanda Joint Steering Committee, held from 11 to 14 May 2026, as part of ongoing cooperation under a bilateral memorandum of understanding on water resources management. Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, said the committee's recommendations would establish a clear roadmap for practical implementation.

Progress was also reported on identifying four proposed sites for groundwater stations, with geophysical studies already under way. A first joint training programme is scheduled for June 2026, reflecting advances in capacity building and expertise transfer between the two countries. Sewilam highlighted Egypt's recent launch of a $100 million regional financing mechanism to support development projects across southern Nile Basin countries, and invited Rwanda to participate in Cairo Water Week 2026, set for 25 to 29 October under the theme "Water as a Catalyst for Peace, Shared Prosperity, and a Sustainable Planet." While not a tourism story in the traditional sense, growing regional cooperation and infrastructure investment across the Nile Basin carries direct implications for sustainable tourism development across East and North Africa.
