Durban plans beachfront amusement park

eThekwini Municipality has announced a R1 billion (about US$61 million) amusement and family entertainment park on the former Durban Funworld site along the Golden Mile, with completion targeted for 2027. Positioned to revitalise the beachfront economy and strengthen Durban’s appeal as a year‑round coastal destination, the project forms part of the city’s broader investment strategy.

Planned attractions include a Lightning Roller Coaster, Disko 24, a vertical swing and a 0.15‑hectare virtual reality park featuring more than 160 interactive games and e‑sports activations. The scheme will be delivered with two Italian amusement engineering firms linked to Ferrari World, Universal Studios and Disneyland, led by Durban‑based Masithu Consulting and Project Managers. The development is expected to create about 900 construction jobs and more than 500 permanent roles, with added features such as pedestrian walkways, viewing decks and themed food courts in an alcohol‑free, family‑oriented setting. Construction will commence once statutory and commercial approvals are finalised.
