DRC advances plans to make Kolwezi airport fourth international gateway

The Democratic Republic of Congo is moving to upgrade Kolwezi airport to full international status, which would make it the country’s fourth recognised entry point for overseas arrivals. Senior officials meeting in Kinshasa recently reviewed pre-financing proposals for essential air navigation equipment, marking progress in the certification process.

The upgrade targets compliance with ICAO standards and will require investment in navigation systems, safety infrastructure and operational procedures. Improved connectivity would enhance access to Lualaba Province and the Copperbelt business hub, reduce reliance on existing gateways and create new routing options, supporting business travel and unlocking tourism potential in southern DRC.
