David Attenborough Gorilla Documentary Puts Rwanda's Conservation Story on Global Stage
A feature-length documentary on Rwanda's mountain gorillas, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, is now available globally on Netflix as of today. Titled A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough, the film was produced by Silverback Films in collaboration with Appian Way Productions, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Filmed over an extended period in Volcanoes National Park, the documentary follows Pablo's gorilla family, exploring behavioural dynamics, social structure, and generational continuity - building on Attenborough's longstanding connection to Rwanda's mountain gorillas, which dates to his 1978 visit to the park.
Beyond its conservation narrative, the production actively contributed to Rwanda's tourism value chain, utilising local accommodation, transport, guiding, and permit services, while also engaging Rwandan creatives and filmmakers through workshops facilitated by the Rwanda Film Office. Irène Murerwa, Chief Tourism Officer at the RDB, noted that the documentary offers a platform to share Rwanda's two-decade conservation journey with global audiences, reflecting both the science and the community partnership behind it. A London cinematic screening, scheduled for 21 April 2026, brings together stakeholders from conservation, media, and creative industries. For the African tourism sector, the film represents a significant moment of destination visibility at a global scale.
