Cape Winelands Airport Shares First Architectural Concepts Ahead of R8 Billion Expansion
The developers behind the planned R8 billion expansion of Cape Winelands Airport have released early architectural concept designs by Boogertman + Partners Architects, offering the first visual indication of the project's scale and direction. The designs draw on the region's landscape, vineyard patterns, mountain backdrops and Winelands heritage to shape the terminal's spatial character. Originally built in 1943 and acquired by RSA Aero in 2020, the airport is being developed into a full international commercial facility offering scheduled airline services, general aviation, cargo operations, logistics hub functions and commercial property development across an approximately 350 000m² site. The project has secured Strategic Integrated Project 17 status from Infrastructure South Africa, final environmental approvals and City of Cape Town rezoning consent.
Growthpoint Properties, South Africa's largest listed real estate development firm, joined as strategic partner in 2025 and will co-develop a 450-hectare mixed-use aviation precinct adjacent to the terminal, with construction expected to begin later in 2026 and first-phase commissioning targeted for as early as 2028, subject to approvals. A cooperation agreement with Stellenbosch University will support innovation across smart and green development themes, spanning agriculture, spatial planning, transport and logistics, space and aviation research, and the integration of airport operations with urban development. The project is projected to support more than 35 000 direct and 100 000 indirect jobs within its first 20 years of operation, with developers describing the development as a potential catalyst for significant economic growth across the Western Cape region.
