Cabo Verde Enhances Nature Tourism with Upgrades
Cabo Verde has launched a significant infrastructure upgrade on the island of Santo Antão to strengthen its position as a premier nature-based tourism destination. Backed by World Bank financing through the Resilient Tourism and Blue Economy Development Project, the government—via the Ministry of Tourism and Transport and the Institute of Tourism—rehabilitated and signposted 47km of pedestrian trails and conducted a full mapping of the island’s 309km trail network. Routes have been published on major hiking platforms including Wikiloc and AllTrails, boosting international visibility.
The next investment phase will see the construction of lookout towers and further trail improvements in the municipalities of Porto Novo, Ribeira Grande, and Paul. Complementary efforts include a technical assistance programme focused on hiking tourism governance, local capacity building, and sustainable tourism practices. These upgrades are part of Cabo Verde’s broader strategy to increase tourism resilience, diversify rural offerings, and ensure local communities benefit more directly from the visitor economy.
