Botswana's Makgadikgadi Pans Host Rhino Conservation Air Race from 26 to 29 June
The Race for the Rhinos Aviation Event is taking place at Mosu Airfield in Botswana's Makgadikgadi Pans from 26 to 29 June 2026, returning after a seven-year hiatus. The four-day event features a precision air race involving 22 aviators flying 11 aircraft along a route through Nata, Gweta, Orapa and Kubu Island, with participants travelling from South Africa, Japan, the United Kingdom, Dubai and the United States. Funds raised will support the planned relocation of 13 white rhinos donated by South Africa and the establishment of a new conservation site within the Makgadikgadi Wetland System.
Proceeds will fund the first phase of ecological groundwork, including aerial and ground surveys, habitat assessments, GPS collaring, electrified perimeter fencing and the recruitment and training of wildlife rangers. Account Director at Incepta Communications, Rebatho Tumagole, noted that while white rhinos remain classified as Near Threatened globally, Botswana's population remains low and vulnerable to poaching. The project, operating under the patronage of former President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama, emphasises community participation as central to its long-term conservation strategy - recognising that communities which benefit economically from wildlife become its most effective guardians. Visitors to the event can also enjoy scenic flights, tandem paragliding, motorsport activities and cultural showcases.
