ATTA® Member Brief | UK Pricing Transparency Rules

What is happening?
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has issued guidance requiring travel businesses to display the total price of a holiday upfront, including all unavoidable fees and charges, rather than adding them later in the booking process.

Why does this matter for ATTA® members?
Many African travel products include mandatory costs that form part of the final holiday price. When selling to UK consumers, these may need to be included in the advertised price.

Examples of charges that may need to be included:

  • National park entry fees
  • Conservation or community levies
  • Tourism or bed taxes
  • Mandatory transfers
  • Required service charges

Who should review this?

  • Tour operators selling African itineraries in the UK market
  • African suppliers contracting with UK operators

What should members check?

  • Rate sheets clearly identify mandatory charges.
  • Contracts and quotations specify unavoidable costs.
  • Package pricing reflects the full cost where required.

Industry engagement
ATTA® is part of a group of travel associations working with ABTA – The Travel Association to represent industry concerns. ABTA will continue to engage with the CMA and advocate for enforcement that is practical for travel businesses and allows sufficient time for companies to make necessary adjustments.

Key takeaway
Clear communication between suppliers and operators on mandatory costs will help ensure compliance when selling African travel products to UK consumers.
