African Parks Renews 25-Year Partnership for Zambia's Liuwa Plain National Park
African Parks, the Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE), and Zambia's Ministry of Tourism have renewed their long-term management partnership for Liuwa Plain National Park, extending a relationship that began in 2003. The renewed agreement also incorporates a portion of the Upper West Zambezi Game Management Area, recognising the importance of conserving the wider landscape that supports Liuwa's wildebeest migration - the second-largest in Africa. The 336,000-hectare park is home to approximately 12,000 Lozi residents and healthy populations of lion, hyaena, wild dog, cheetah, and wildebeest, with wildlife recoveries now contributing animals to restoration efforts elsewhere in Zambia.
The renewal marks a significant milestone for African Parks, as Liuwa Plain was the organisation's first management partnership. Over more than two decades, the collaboration has restored wildlife populations and ecological processes while protecting community rights, supporting sustainable livelihoods, and creating employment opportunities for thousands of Lozi families. Going forward, the partnership will focus on strengthening conservation outcomes, community development, sustainable financing, and the integrity of key migratory corridors beyond the park boundary. African Parks currently manages 24 protected areas across 13 African countries, covering more than 20 million hectares.
