Karisia Walking Safaris specialises in walking safaris supported by camels. Our trips offer a unique perspective on not just the animals but the land they live in. On foot, we fine tune our senses and experience the country in vivid and exciting detail.
We are based in Laikipia, and Tumaren has been our base for exploration since 2005. We take our multi day walking safaris in the immediate Laikipia area but we also range much farther afield, such as the Karisia Hills and the Lower Ewaso Wilderness. The range of terrain and variety of wildlife and ecosystems that we encounter is diverse and it is all brought alive by our guides and teams who are all local to the region.
Our mobile walking safaris are supported by camels who carry all the gear from campsite to campsite ensuring guests stay in style and comfort all the way. We have 2-5 riding camels that keep the walkers company, carry refreshments and day packs. The remaining camel train carries the entire camp to a new spot each day. We cater for luxury without compromising adventure and we have put together countless safaris for people of all ages and group sizes.
Tumaren Camp, which was originally our home beside a wildlife-popular salt lick, has become a great base for our guests to explore the area and the many activities we offer. Tumaren Camp can be booked on an exclusive basis or with mixed groups and each group has their own guide throughout their stay, and is a lovely beginning or end to a walking safari and a perfect option for multi-generation groups whose older members want family adventure options from the comfort of a larger camp.
Guests staying at Tumaren Camp can go out each day on walks, tracking, camel riding, rock climbing, biking and jogging and game drives. Community based activities also include visits to a local Masai Manyatta, beading, vibrant market visits, tours of our nearby schools, or challenging our student Ultimate Frisbee Team to a game in a beautiful dry river bed. Or simply relax and enjoy by the pool and at our pool house.
With a minimum 2 night stay, Tumaren Camp has seven large ensuite safari tents that are available as single, double or family accommodation. We also have two dining rooms and sitting rooms to ensure different groups have as much privacy as they might need.
At Tumaren Camp and on our walking safaris you will have your own guide to tailor each day.

Karisia Air BnC Walking Safari Dome Tent
Our Air Bed and Camel safari is perfect for travellers for whom the experience is more important than luxuries. The tents are 4 man dome tents with sheets and blankets and towels. The comfortable camp is much lighter camp which means less staff and camels used to move it. Meals are freshly prepared each day with breakfast and dinner served at the table and lunch is an informal buffet-style. We can cater to any dietary requirements. A wide choice of beer, wines and spirits are included for those who love to have their taste of alcohol in the wild.

Karisia Classic Walking Safari Tent
The Classic walking safari with camels is a journey and the camp moves daily to new settings with the help of our team and camels (10-25 camels depending on the group size). The 4 poster bed is left behind, but the king size mattress, feather pillows and duvet are not. Your accommodation is in a large, traditional, canvas tent with chairs, a table, a mirror, drinking water and a basin on the veranda. The luxurious bedding includes 2 pillows, sheets and duvets, dressing gowns, towels, hot water bottles, solar lights and carpets. On request we can include camp beds and if you want a family style tent, we can join two tents together making the children feel secure. You can request for a safari bucket shower that comes with plenty of hot water and there is a toilet behind each tent. Meals are freshly prepared each day with breakfast and dinner served at the table and lunch is an informal buffet-style. We can cater to any dietary requirements. A wide choice of beer, wines and spirits are included for those who love to have their taste of alcohol in the wild.

Karisia - Rock Climbing
We have been guiding rock climbing since we began the company in 2003. We ‘top rope’ from paired drilled anchors and we have a number of set routes for the beginner to the experienced climber. We take safety very seriously using only the best and newest equipment and having climbing instructors routinely come in to audit our routes, equipment and techniques. As an added bonus we often times have Giraffe and Elephants that mill about the base of the hill to watch our skills.

Karisia - Local community visit
Visiting the homes of one of our Masai neighbours is great fun. It is interesting to visit in the evening when the livestock comes in for the night. You can watch the goats and cows being milked and go into the homes to catch a glimpse of the day-to-day life of our neighbours. The children are very playful and enjoy a game of football or ultimate Frisbee.
