Zimbabwe Tourism Authority Rolls Out Nationwide Compliance Crackdown
The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) has launched a nationwide compliance and enforcement blitz targeting tourism operators found to be operating outside the country's legal and regulatory framework. The exercise, which extends a national compliance drive conducted earlier this year, has already resulted in the closure of several restaurants for failing to meet requirements under Section 36 of the Tourism Act (Chapter 14:20), which governs the registration and licensing of designated tourism facilities.
ZTA Chief Executive Officer Dr George Manyaya said regional managers are now conducting inspections across all provinces, covering registration, grading, complaint-driven assessments, and targeted enforcement. Grading inspections, which apply primarily to accommodation establishments, are conducted every two years or following major refurbishments. Dr Manyaya emphasised that the programme is not solely punitive - it forms part of the ZTA's broader mandate to foster a well-regulated, credible, and sustainable tourism industry. The blitz comes as Zimbabwe continues efforts to raise sector-wide standards ahead of its broader tourism growth ambitions.
