Zanzibar to develop eco-tourism trail with mobile app
Zanzibar introduced a mobile app for the new Kizimkazi Hiking Loop, a 10 km eco-tourism trail in the island's southern region. This innovative project, spearheaded by UNDP Tanzania in collaboration with State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, aims to merge technology with nature conservation.
The bespoke app, central to the initiative, offers more than just navigation. It provides real-time updates on nearby attractions, safety alerts, and rich cultural insights, enhancing the visitor experience while promoting local businesses. Tourists can discover hidden gems, from small cafes to artisanal markets, all at their fingertips.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the app also educates users about the local ecosystem and encourages responsible tourism practices. By integrating with global platforms like Komoot, it aims to put Southern Zanzibar on the map as a premier eco-tourism destination.
The Kizimkazi Hiking Loop app exemplifies how digital technology can promote sustainable development in the tourism sector.
