Zanzibar introduces new regulations for private tourist accommodations
The Zanzibar government has unveiled new regulations for non-hotel tourist accommodations in response to the rising popularity of private residences as holiday lodgings. Tourism Minister Mudrick Ramadhani Soraga announced the guidelines at a stakeholders' meeting on 4 July 2024.
Under the new rules, all accommodation providers must register with the Zanzibar Tourism Commission and obtain a licence following an inspection. Registration fees vary by region, with Mjini Magharibi costing Sh150,000 and other areas Sh250,000 (approx. 44 – 47 GBP).
The regulations apply to both locals and diaspora members. Licensed properties must meet business standards, and licences can be revoked for violations. Penalties for non-compliance include fines up to $5,000 (approx. GBP 3905) or imprisonment ranging from 3 months to five years.
