Zambia in High-Level Talks with UN Tourism Delegation

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema hosted a delegation from UN Tourism in Lusaka this week, reaffirming the country’s commitment to positioning itself as a leading African destination. Meeting with UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, the President emphasised the need for international collaboration to unlock Zambia’s tourism potential, highlighting the country’s rich natural assets and the government’s push for sustainable tourism-driven economic growth.

The visit comes as Zambia aims to revitalise its tourism sector through policy reforms, infrastructure development, and increased international arrivals. Alongside the tourism discussions, President Hichilema also met with China’s LONGi Green Energy delegation, marking a dual focus on sustainable development. While tourism remains central to Zambia’s growth strategy, expanding renewable energy capacity—especially in response to ongoing drought-related power shortages—is seen as crucial to supporting broader economic activity, including the tourism industry.
