Zambia and Malawi Form Joint Committee to Drive Cross-Border Tourism
Zambia and Malawi have agreed to establish a Joint Technical Committee on tourism cooperation following a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of Africa's Travel Indaba 2026 in Durban. The talks, between Zambia's Permanent Secretary for Tourism Evans Muhanga and Malawi's Principal Secretary for Tourism Jeanie Mnyenyembe, centred on destination marketing, regional promotion, investment opportunities and the development of cross-border tourism products aimed at increasing visitor numbers and economic returns across the region.
The Joint Technical Committee will serve as a formal platform for coordinating joint marketing efforts, knowledge sharing and tourism development initiatives between the two neighbouring countries. Both officials emphasised the strategic value of regional integration, with Muhanga noting that closer cooperation would help position Southern Africa as a competitive global destination, while Mnyenyembe described the agreement as timely in advancing regional tourism integration. Key priorities identified include promoting shared natural and cultural heritage, improving tourism connectivity, and increasing joint participation in international trade fairs and exhibitions.
