Webinar Recording - How the safari industry can team up to save Africa’s pangolins
Pangolins are a rare and thrilling sighting in Africa’s bush. But these unique creatures are the most highly traffi cked wildlife species on earth. Our Pangolin Guardians programme aims to bring together safari operators, guides, and clients to learn more about Africa’s pangolins - and how to protect them.
Summary of the key points
- One pangolin is poached from the wild every fi ve minutes. The situation facing the African pangolin has reached a tipping point. If we don’t act now, this animal could disappear in our lifetime.
- Pangolin.Africa works in a three-pronged approach of publicity, participation, and protection.
- We work with global partners in tourism, conservation, and business to contribute to research, protection, and rehabilitation of this vulnerable species.
- Our projects work to protect pangolins through rescue and rehabilitation, piloting pangolin-friendly electric fencing, and spreading awareness.
- Awareness among the safari community is key, as they are at the frontline of Africa’s precious wildlife.
- With our Pangolin.Guaridan programme, safari operators, guides and clients can learn safe sighting procedures - that ensure pangolins feel safe and return to the same location again and again.
- They also learn how to recognise a pangolin in distress - and how to get help or assistance with the Pangolert hotline.
- Spreading awareness in communities around safari locations is also key.
- Pangolin.Africa enables that with its Pangolin Guardian Education Programme, which takes learning about pangolins into classrooms.
- We encourage you and your clients to support this programme and sponsor an education pack for learners in African schools.
- Above all, we urge the safari community and its clients to become Pangolin.Guardians - and to join our efforts to save Africa’s pangolins.
