US-Nigeria Open Skies Air Transport Agreement Takes Effect

The United States-Nigeria Open Skies Air Transport Agreement, provisionally applied since 2000, officially entered into force on 13 May 2024. This bilateral agreement establishes a modern civil aviation relationship between the two countries, consistent with U.S. Open Skies policy and adherence to high aviation safety and security standards.
The agreement allows unrestricted capacity and frequency of services, open route rights, a liberal charter regime, and open code-sharing opportunities. It represents a significant step toward liberalizing the international civil aviation sector in Africa and expands the strong economic and commercial partnership between the U.S. and Nigeria.
The Open Skies Agreement aims to promote people-to-people ties, create new opportunities for airlines, travel companies, and customers, and facilitate more affordable, convenient, and efficient air services for travellers and shippers, thereby boosting tourism and commerce between the two nations.
